Speedwatch Scheme searches for volunteers

The Baswich Community Group is calling for community spirited individuals to support a recently-launched speedwatch scheme. A number of volunteers have already signed up for the scheme in Baswich, the first in the Stafford area, and are fully equipped and trained thanks to the generous financial support of local people.

But there is still a need for volunteers and the community, supported by officers from Stafford Neighbourhood Policing Unit (NPU) are calling for others to come forward and give their time to support the scheme.

Working in groups, local trained volunteers who have already come forward share a common goal of addressing the issue of speeding motorists in their local community and we would urge further volunteers to come forward and support this scheme in their community. Through such a scheme we can reduce the number of casualties and create a safer environment in which people live and work.

Speedwatch teams use a British hi-tech laser speed equipment at pre-identified locations to track speed, registration number and make of the vehicle which is then verified by the Community Safety Unit. Offenders are issued with an advisory warning letter requesting that their speed be curtailed. If the same vehicle is caught on a second occasion by the Community Speedwatch campaign, a follow-up final letter is issued and the details will then be duly noted by local police.

Whilst no penalty points are afforded to offenders during the Community Speedwatch campaign, police will be carrying-out formal speeding campaigns in areas where persistent speeders are considered to be located.

Any local residents who are concerned about road safety and would consider becoming involved in the Baswich Community Speedwatch Action Group should  contact the Group by e-mail as soon as possible.
